October12 Thursday

We traveled the hills of New Hampshire and Massechusetts via narrow roads that are closely treed and one feels like the route is a country lane.

The air felt heavy with moisture all day; there was a low cloud cover mist which was burned off at 4:30 this aft. Tonight we have a clear sky. It is dark already. We have had supper as we are 3 hours ahead of the West.

We saw lots of water today. There were large and small lakes and rivers. There was lots of swampy areas that looked like they would be inhabited by moose. No luck on the moose! The most spectacular water was the Connecticut River where there is the Francis King bridge arches over the river which is far below. The surrounding hills are beautifully coloured with yellows, reds, oranges and greens.

We had lunch in the hills of New Hampshire in a conservation area near a lovely small lake or river. We felt very isolated. The gun shots started soon after we arrived. They were sporadic and a whistle blew before and/orr after the shots. We were uneasy but felt that the shots were coming from across the water. About 30 minutes after the first shot two people in bright orange vests and a dog walked down to the water’s edge. One of the pair was carrying a gun and the dog is sniffing and searching.

We are traveling the Mowhawk Trail.

Cheers.
